a healthy cow will ovulate every 21ish days. once bred the gestation period is just over 9 months long.. so when we put bulls out to pasture in mid-July, we expect the majority of our calves to be born from mid-April to the end of May.
bulls are the only way that fresh genetics arrive on our farm, all of our cows are home grown, meaning buying high quality bulls is crucial to the genetic advancement of the herd. we have 2 different types of bulls on our farm: the big white ones like this bull are a French breed called "Charolais", the other breed being smaller red bulls from Scotland called "Red Angus".
different breeds of bulls are used for different reasons but one thing is for sure, when an animal far exceeds 1500lbs with a lot of testosterone in their system, it can create a dynamic environment! 😈 😂
